To the unfamiliar observer, the bewildering developments in global AI governance and regulation may carry superficial similarities with the hit movie, “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. This session intends to provide some structure and insight into the machinations that shape AI governance and regulatory discourse globally and regionally, including how data protection laws are being used as the primary de facto tool to regulate AI risks.
In this 2-hour webinar, participants will be exposed to: (a) an overview of AI governance and regulation and some of the key considerations that shape it; (b) A comparative scan of AI regulatory approaches in five regions, namely US, EU, China, the rest of APAC and Singapore, as well as takeaways for Singapore; and (c) The use of data protection law as a regulatory tool for AI (especially generative AI).
By the end of the session, participants will gain an understanding of the current state and trajectory of AI governance and regulation globally and regionally, and the benefits and challenges of using existing data protection regimes to regulate advanced AI technologies.
SPEAKER
As Managing Director (APAC) of the Future of Privacy Forum (FPF), Josh leads a team advancing principled and pragmatic data protection practices in support of emerging technologies. He regularly engages with top governmental committees and international organisations, including the UK House of Lords, ASEAN, APEC, and the G7 data protection authorities.
Prior to this, Josh served as the Legal Policy Manager for AI Governance in Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Commission, where he drove Singapore's AI governance policies. He also served as Assistant Director for Legal Policy in the Ministry of Law and practiced as an international disputes lawyer.
Josh is the current Director and founding Chairperson of the Asia-Pacific Legal Innovation and Technology Association. Josh also co-founded LawTech.Asia, a virtual publication on law and technology in Asia. In 2023 and 2019, Josh was identified by Asia Law Portal as one of Asia’s “Top 30 To Watch” in legal innovation and the business of law.
Josh serves as a council member of Singapore’s 7th Media Literacy Council. Josh is also a member of Singapore’s Law Reform Subcommittee for Robotics and AI, and an adjunct faculty member and External Research Fellow of the Singapore Management University Yong Pung How School of Law, where he teaches AI law, policy and ethics. Josh was also a chapter author for the pioneering book Law and Technology in Singapore.
Josh obtained his LL.M. (with a specialization in Law and Technology) from Berkeley Law in 2022, when he was named to the school's Dean’s List. A member of Asia Society’s Asia 21 Next Generation Fellows Class of 2024 and Prestige 40 Under 40’s Class of 2025, as well as a recipient of the National Youth Council’s ASEAN Youth Fellowship in 2024, Josh received his LL.B from the Singapore Management University Yong Pung How School of Law in 2015, and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2016.
